Info :

Mustafa Akkad choose once again to the writer HAL Craig (*) to write the script and the composer Maurice Jarre (**) for the music of his last big blockbuster: "Omar Mujtar. The Lion of the Desert" (1981).

Rima Akkad
The list of special leading figures from "The Lion of the Desert" is headed by actor Anthony Quinn, Mexican origin (Omar Al-Mujtar), the British Oliver Reed (General Graziani) and Sir John Gielgud (al-Sharif Gariani Transl by Naomi Attwood), American Rod Steiger (Benito Mussolini), the Italians Raf Vallone (Colonel Diodiece) Gastone Moschin (Colonel Tonelli), Stefano Patrizzi (Lieutenant Sandrini), Adolfo Lastretti (Colonel Sarsani) and Rodolfo Bigotti (Ismail), the Greeks Irene Pappas (Mabruk) , Takis Emmanuel (Bu Matari of Kufra) and Eleonora Stathópulos (Ali's mother) and child Libyan Ihab Werfaly (Ali).

The original duration of "The Lion of the Desert" is 162 minutes. Many videos are inexplicably availability in 150 minutes, and the version submitted in cinemas in Buenos Aires in 1981 was 147 minutes due to cuts censorship practised by the so-called "Process of National Reorganization", which disrupt the essential message of the film -- especially by the surpresión of the second part of the dialogues between Libyan and Italian Store in Parliament, meeting with the traitor Sidi Omar Al-Gariani Transl by Naomi Attwood and the scenes where he denounces the use of chemical weapons by the invaders "prohibited by Geneva Convention of 1925 ".

Until 1993, its projection in cinemas and video distribution was banned in Italy on the grounds that her scenes and messages contained elements that aggrieved feelings of the Italian nation.

However, despite achieving high quality technical achievements and with a highly developed content that had nothing to envy of any other filmmaker in the world, Mustafa Akkad was quite ignored by themselves. For example, since 1990 tried unsuccessfully to shoot a film epic about the life of Salahuddin al_Ayyubi (1137-1193), the famous Sultan Saladin of the Crusades that became known worldwide thanks to the film "Crusade" (Kingdon of Reaven) Ridley Scott in 2005. The idea was that Akkad was that Sean Connery to embody Saladin, which had been an unimaginable success. The Scottish actor also was entusiasmadísimo up with the proposal and had learned the script by heart. But inexplicably, the potentates of the Arab world systematically denied financing and was due to relinquish Saladino of Mustafa Akkad and Sean Connery
